Tony Coe jazz discography...
Tony Coe was born in Canterbury, Kent in 1934. He began playing clarinet and after local gigs played with Joe Daniels 1952/3 before he joined the Army for three years playing clarinet and alto sax. He rejoined Joe Daniels in 1956 before beginning a four year spell in the mainstream band of Humphrey Lyttelton from 1957 to 1961. He made very few records under his own name but through this period he made several records, mostly with a quintet co-led by John Picard.
Tony Coe continued to play with Humphrey Lyttelton on and off from 1963 to 1968. He made few records under his own name until 1967 he recorded an album for Columbia with a four piece string section and a rhythm section. His next jazz record was a live recording at Ronnie Scott's club for Doug Dobell's 77 label.
A spell with the Dankworth band during 1967-'68 was followed by a four year spell from 1968-'72 with the Francy Boland Big Band. He also began a long association with Stan Tracey. Thereafter he did a lot of work on a freelance basis and had success as a composer and soloist on film soundtracks. He continued to play as a freelance and writer through to the 2000s including touring with his own quartet in 1995 and '96.
After his 1971 record date with Brian Lemon's Trio Coe had no more jazz LPs under his own name issued in the UK until 1988. There were a numberof records made for European labels that were not issued in the UK. From the late 1990s he made a number of CDs for specialist labels.

Ron Malings: "I have a CD titled MANCINI and sub-titled "The Pink Panther and The Return of the Pink Panther" (Camden / BMG 74321 660472). There are 25 tracks, 5 of which feature Tony Coe's tenor sax. The first 4 of those 5 are from the first PP film which has the copyright date 1963. Since the film was released the following year, it's safe to say the recording was actually from 1963. The sleeve notes give no details at all of the music or its performers. Those 4 tracks are: The Pink Panther theme / Royal Blue / Something for Sellers / The Pink Panther theme.
The second Pink Panther film was released in 1974 and the mood and arrangement of the music is much different except for the first part of track 18 - The Return of the Pink Panther (part 1). This features Tony Coe and I would bet that it was recorded in 1963."

The album detailed below has been brought to my attention by Ian Green who reports that "Pop Makes Progress" is an enjoyable album of big band jazz arrangements of (then) current pop songs. With Tony well to the fore on tenor and clarinet. He cuts loose a few times with some wild fiery solos and there's some wonderfully expressive, sensitive playing too..."
