Pat Smythe...
Pat Smythe c1963 Pianist Pat Smythe was born in Edinburgh in 1923. He served in the RAF as a pilot and then took up law moving to London temporarily where he worked in Dizzy Reece's Quartet early in 1968. He then returned to Scotland to complete his law studies and became a practising solicitor. He soon moved back to London to become a professional musician, working and recording with Joe Harriott in the 1960s.
He played occasionally in Tubby Hayes' Quartet and during the 1960s he also led his own groups as well as doing theatre work. He led his own radio bands as well arranging for the BBC Radio Big Band and for the Danish Radio Big Band. He accompanied US musicians and vocalists including Stan Getz, Ben Webster, Sonny Stitt, Paul Gonsalves (with whom he recorded), Zoot Sims, Anita O'Day and Tony Bennett. During the 1970s he often worked with Kenny Wheeler as well as Ronnie Scott, Ronnie Ross, Tony Kinsey and Johnny Dankworth. During the 1970s and 1980s he often worked as accompanist for Elaine Delmar. He died in London in May, 1983.
