Norman Stenfalt...
Piano player and arranger Norman Stenfalt was born in Ilford in 1922. He began studying piano at the age of five and started arranging when he was fifteen and joined Teddy Foster in 1937. Work followed in 1938 with with Alan Green's Band and 1940/1 with Nat Gonella's New Georgians with whom he made his first records in August 1940. When Gonella was called up for Army service Stenfalt started working with Johnny Claes and his Clay Pigeons and was briefly with Frank Weir before, in 1942, he joined the RAF.

Like other service personnel he was given leave to play with civilian groups, notably Harry Hayes Band, and the Ted Heath Orchestra. when he left the RAF in 1945 he co-led, with Harry Hayes, a small group spotlighting his original compositions and arrangements, many of which were recorded for EMI, although unfortunately these have never been re-issued on CD. When the group broke up in March 1946 he joined Ted Heath on a regular basis as pianist and staff arranger, specialising in modern adaptations of older tunes. Then, tired of touring he joined Ambrose at the Nightingale Club, London in November 1948. This was a star studded band that recorded many sides for Decca. The saxophone section, led by Harry Hayes, included Johnny Dankworth, Ronnie Scott and Kenny Graham. Kenny Baker was the featured trumpeter.

Freelance work followed and during 1949/50 together with Kenny Baker he played the background music for the stage production of A Streetcar Named Desire featuring Vivien Leigh. During this period he became involved with the Club Eleven bebop scene with the Dankworth Quartet. This led to a long association with Ronnie Scott and from 1952 to July 1954 he played with Scott, with his Jazz Group and his Quintet - recorded for Esquire and still not re-issued on CD. In 1954, after Scott, he joined the Jack Parnell Band until September 1955 when he returned to Ronnie Scott for his ill-fated big band venture. When that failed in January 1956 he rejoined Jack Parnell and continued with Parnell until he formed the house orchestra for the TV company ATV. This job lasted into the early 1980s when the TV studios closed.

In the late 1950s he had taken part in the Kenny Baker's Dozen very popular radio programmes for the BBC and also record dates where he acted as MD for various vocalists. He also figured in the memorable records made by Victor Feldman for the Tempo label before Feldman left the UK for good. For the last ten years of his life he played for the Ted Heath tribute band led by Don Lusher. He died in November 1991, two months before his 70th birthday.

Norman Stenfalt

During his later years he did a lot of musical arrangements for a number of bands. He was one of the UK's most creative and original piano stylists and during his career recorded with most of the leading jazz names of the 1950s. A fair amount of his work is available on CD although some areas, particularly with Harry Hayes and Ronnie Scott are still missing.
He was highly regarded by many musicians including Jack Parnell who first met him when they were in the RAF together in the mid 1940s. Parnell speaking just after Stenfalt's death said: "...what I valued most was his tremendous musical wisdom. He had the greatest respect amongst musicians and I respected him more than anyone I know..."

Tony Middleton, the jazz writer, said of him: "....a quiet unassuming person with a slight hint of eccentricity, he once arranged to meet me in town and turned up in perfectly acceptable street clothes but turned up wearing bright checked bedroom slippers..."

Musician Simon Spillett writing in 2005 said "Norman Stenfalt was another pianist who mixed harmonic erudition and quirkiness to telling effect, as surviving recordings with Ronnie Scott and Victor Feldman attest. Yet he, too, was cursed by the reputation that both celebrates and damns, that of being a 'musician's musician.' Commercial studio work, both as a player and an arranger, increasingly became his main musical output during the 1950s, but even in these settings his taste and individuality shone through..."
Nat Gonella and his New Georgians - August, 1940 to August, 1942 (Columbia)
Nat Gonella, Jack Wallis, C.Oughton (tp), Miff King (tb), Jock Middleton, Jack Bonser, Joe Moore, Mickey Siedman (reeds), Norman Stenfalt (p), Roy Dexter (g), Will Hemmings (b), Johnny Roland (d), Stella Moya (vocal).
In this two year period the band recorded no less than seventy sides, usually recording four titles on a session. The band was enormously popular, but conscription of it's members into the armed forces curtailed it's activities. After 1942 Nat Gonella did not lead a band in the recording studio again until 1945. The band personnel was completely different.
